FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE TO TAKE A CLASS OR JOIN?
Absolutely not. At Cincinnati Fitness & Boxing, our focus is to help you achieve your personal goals! Some people are looking to lose weight or reduce body-fat percentage while others are already in shape and are looking to improve upon their boxing technique. Our classes are designed to be self-paced and accessible for all levels of fitness and experience. If you are not able to do any of the exercises during class, we will always show you alternatives that you can do.
DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO START?
No, not at all. We get beginners in almost every class. We will teach you everything you need to get started. You will have a blast, get fit, and learn a ton! All of our classes are tailored for fun, fitness, and technique. There’s a quote that goes, “It’s the start that stops most people.” Don’t let it stop you; everybody was a beginner at some point!
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO BRING TO GET STARTED?
For your first time, all you need to bring is workout clothes and a water bottle. We have hand-wraps and boxing gloves that you can use. Hand-wraps are protective wrapping that are worn underneath the boxing gloves and help to protect all the small bones and joints in your wrists, hands and fingers.
After you join the gym, we recommend that you purchase your own hand-wraps. Hand-wraps typically come in two sizes, 108” and 180”. We recommend everybody purchases 180” wraps. We sell very high quality wraps at the gym for $10 per pair. We have plenty of boxing gloves at the gym that anybody can use, but for those who come regularly, we suggest purchasing your own pair of gloves. See a staff member at CFB if you’d like to order a pair of gloves through us. Depending on the type, they usually cost between $30 to $70.
WHAT TYPES OF EQUIPMENT DOES THE GYM HAVE?
At Cincinnati Fitness & Boxing we have 2 professional sized boxing rings, approximately 20 heavy bags in all shapes and sizes, 6 speed bags, double-end bags, ground and pound bags, medicine balls, resistance bands, tires, ropes, sledge hammers, stationary bikes, a full weight area and a lot of open mat space for jumping rope, shadow-boxing, body-weight exercises, etc.
ARE YOUR CLASSES SAFE?
Yes! Our classes are non-contact, meaning that you will not be getting hit or hitting anybody during the fitness boxing classes. We offer separate sparring classes for those who would like to take their boxing to the next level and actually get in the ring and compete. All sparring participants must be approved by CFB staff after attending CFB classes and demonstrating proper technique, attitude and self-control. Sparring is all done in an organized environment, with the participants working with each other to make each other better, not looking to hurt each other.
WHAT ARE THE CLASSES LIKE?
A typical class begins with a 5-10 minute warm-up to break a light sweat and get everybody loosened-up. After that beginners will go with one of the instructors to be shown proper boxing stance and movement, punching technique and how to work on a heavy bag properly. We start all beginners off with just two punches, the jab and the cross and will then get into hooks and upper-cuts in future classes.
After that we will break into what we call “rounds”. Boxing matches consist of 3-minute rounds, so we simulate that by doing 3 minutes of activity followed by 1 minute rest periods. Some of these rounds you will be on your own doing whatever you want to do, i.e. working on a heavy bag or speed bag, jumping rope, etc. Some rounds will be spent with an instructor. We usually have between 2-5 instructors per class who will be working with people individually in the ring on technique using focus mitts, putting you through a hard fast-paced round of ground and pound, putting the class through punching or kicking drills on the heavy bags or working with people on cross-training equipment.
After about 8 of these rounds, we typically finish up with a group activity. Some classes the instructor will put the group through drills on the heavy bags, some classes we take the gloves off and focus on abdominal and core exercises, some classes we hit the legs hard and others we set-up cross-training weight stations for a full-body workout. Our classes have a very good mix of self-paced time, individual instruction and group activities and are all high energy with plenty of music, sweat, and fun.
CAN I TRY A CLASS BEFORE I SIGN UP AS A MEMBER?
Yes! Your first class is always free at Cincinnati Fitness & Boxing. No appointment is necessary; you can come to any of our class times for your first complimentary class to see if you like it.
WHO IS YOUR TYPICAL CUSTOMER?
We typically have two types of clients at CFB. Some people are more focused on fitness. They are looking to lose weight, get fit and stay healthy by doing a fun activity (instead of going to the gym and doing another boring set on the treadmill). Others may be more interested in really learning boxing technique. They may already be in great shape but want to learn more about the sport of boxing and some may even want to compete in the future. Either way, anybody taking our classes will definitely greatly improve their conditioning and become much more proficient in their boxing technique.
ARE YOUR CLASSES GOOD FOR WOMEN?
Most definitely! In fact, some of our clients with the best boxing technique are women. Our classes are usually about half men and half women. All of our programs are designed for both men and women together.
WHAT AGES CAN TAKE THE CLASSES?
We have members at CFB ranging in age from about 13 up to high 60’s. Our classes are designed to be self-paced so that any person of any age or fitness level can participate. We will always show you alternatives for any exercises that you can’t do. There are no age restrictions, but the youngest we would recommend for our classes would be about 12-13. All participants under the age of 18 require parental consent.
